Cranbury Township: A New Jersey Treasure

There is no New Jersey town quite like Cranbury Township. Located in southern Middlesex County within Central Jersey, Cranbury Township is a small town with lots of charm and a strong sense of community. The welcoming 13-square-mile town is composed of diverse residential neighborhoods and vast agricultural lands.

Ranked as one of the best places to live in New Jersey by Niche.com, the township offers a suburban feel with lots of shopping and restaurant destinations and recreational areas and activities. The township is known for its top-rated public school system, which ranks in the top 5% of public schools in New Jersey according to PublicSchoolReview.com. Another highlight of Cranbury Township is its convenient location. It’s situated between New York City and Philadelphia with several major roads and highways passing through the town, including the New Jersey Turnpike and U.S. Route 130. A variety of public transit options makes it easy to get around.

There's no shortage of parks and green space in Cranbury Township, either. With 11 parks and over 230 acres of open space, the township offers a great number of recreational opportunities. The parks provide an array of features such as playgrounds, trails, sports fields, picnic groves, pavilionsand historic sites.

Perhaps what Cranbury Township is most notably known for is its steep history which dates back before the Revolutionary War. As one of the oldest towns in the state, Cranbury Township naturally exudes history. Although Cranbury was officially incorporated as a township in 1872, its first buildings can be traced to 1698. The town’s history includes serving as headquarters for George Washington and his staff as they planned for the Battle of Monmouth in the Revolutionary War. The entire downtown area is designated as a Historic District and many of its buildings date to the 18th and 19th centuries.

The historic district is home to many art galleries and museums, including the popular Cranbury Museum, which features a variety of local artifacts. Locals and visitors alike can take a guided walking tour through the historic district to learn about the area’s history and architecture. Self-guided walking tours are also available. The historic district also offers antique shops, boutique stores, cafes and restaurants including The Cranbury Inn, one of New Jersey’s oldest restaurants.

For all these reasons and more, it’s easy to see why so many call Cranbury Township home.
